:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric McDowell -- Balzac: A masterful critic of human motivations : Balzac understood the forces that drive human behavior and the selfish nature of motivations. This keen understanding is on display throughout PERE GORIOT, one of his best-known novels that certainly deserves its classic status. A cynical and ultimately tragic tale, Balzac's characterizations of a motley crew of lodgers are among some of the most memorable and fully realized in 19th century French literature. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pittsburghmom -- Great book - I think there's a better translation out there, but it's free : I really enjoyed this book. Started reading it because Thomas Piketty references it in his book "Capital in the 21st Century" as it is, like many 19th century novels, openly concerned with financial matters as they affect human relations in a way that modern books aren't. Piketty points out that this is because we live in a more egalitarian society (or did, until recently) and do not have to kowtow to the wealthy for any hope of a decent life. In Pere Goriot, which takes place around 1810-1820, ordinary Parisian men have no hope of escaping extremely modest prospects even through the study of medicine or law, unless they marry a wealthy heiress. The hero, Rastignac, comes to Paris to study medicine and lives in a boarding house populated by down-on-their-luck rentiers, including Pere Goriot. He soon learns that to those who live in Parisian society, the pursuit of money becomes everything, even more important than family or honor. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2014 )

I have loved American and Russian Literature for a long time, but never dabbled in French Literature, though I expect that I will start, now that I have read this. As a younger reader I loved the sacrificial devotion of the father for his daughters. As a mature adult, I was disturbed, finding it what we now would call enabling and infantilizing. Can't say the same for this particular print, it's this big magazine type thing with to columns of text per page, makes for a really awkward reading experience, where it not for the Balzac's words, this edition would be worthless. Dowden -- Maison Vauquer : This is probably Balzac's most popular book in this country, and possibly the one that I have read the most times, indeed it could be argued that if he only had ever written this he would still be known today. This is the Ellen Marriage translation, who I think translated more or less all of the Human Comedy at one time or another. There are very few typos here, but in places the text could have done with cleaning up, as in some of the places a sentence will start on the next line, instead of just continuing. A retired, wealthy trader, Goriot is the butt of jokes at Madame Vanquer's down-at-heel boarding house, deep in the Latin Quarter. But one of the new residents sees past the facade of aged ignorance. Living in a poor boarding house he comes to know the elderly man Goriot. Father of two daughters to whom he has sacrificed all his wealth to secure good marriages, Cypriots health fades amidst abject poverty. His daughters, now in loveless marriages continue to drain him of every sou until he dies a pauper. Eugene, in love with one of them loses his own small fortune and comes to learn of the selfishness, shallowness and hypocrisy of Society. As Goriot dies, with neither daughter at his side until he is beyond consciousness and too late to offer him any comfort, Eugene arranges a pauper burial and looks to the future, no longer a youth. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from sarah -- Balzac - Father Goriot - a brilliant read : What a great book. The overriding message of not over indulging your children is a good one and valid in today's world. Also, the take on society, class snobbery make this an excellent read. The first chapter starts setting the scene - after that it keeps getting better and better.
